What Is Eco-Shake?

Eco-Shake is made from 100% recycled materials, combining reinforced vinyl and cellulose fiber into a lightweight panel that mimics the texture of natural wood shake. Unlike cedar, it doesn't soak up moisture, which counts for a lot in a region where the weather rarely sits still.

Wood shake needs regular attention to keep moisture, sun, and time from wearing it down. Eco-Shake was built to skip that cycle entirely, so you get that handcrafted look without the ongoing chores that come with it. In short, it's what wood shake would be if you designed it for people who'd rather spend their weekends doing something other than roof maintenance.

The Charm of Cedar Without the Constant Care

There's no denying that cedar shake has a classic charm. But over the years, sun exposure and shifting temperatures can cause it to crack, curl, or fade from its original shape.

Eco-Shake was designed with that wear and tear in mind. Here's what sets it apart:

  • No Sealing or Staining: Forget the yearly maintenance routine that comes standard with natural wood-shake roofing.

  • Color Built Into Every Panel: Since the color runs through the material itself, chipping and peeling won't become an issue over time.

  • Sun-Resistant by Design: Sun exposure won't fade these panels the way it would with untreated wood materials.

  • Made From Recycled Materials: Choosing Eco-Shake means getting an eco-conscious roof without compromising on the shake aesthetic.

Authentic cedar still has its fans, and we're glad to install it for homeowners who want that. For everyone else, Eco-Shake is usually the more practical choice.

Choosing Colors and Profiles That Feel Like Home

Eco-Shake pairs the character of natural wood shake with the consistency you only get from a manufactured product. Standard colors are designed to mimic that weathered wood look, and custom colors are available if you're trying to match a specific exterior style.

To recreate the irregular pattern of hand-split shake, panels come in three widths: five inches, seven inches, and twelve inches. Mixing these widths gives the roof that same layered, slightly uneven texture people associate with authentic wood shake, so from the curb, you get all the dimension of the original material without the years of upkeep that come with it.

Eco-Shake has gone up on homes across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, holding its own in all kinds of climates along the way. Whatever your home's exterior style calls for, there's likely an Eco-Shake color and profile combination that fits it.

Confidence Built Into Every Panel

Eco-Shake isn't just about looks. It's engineered to take on the kind of weather New England throws at it, with the certifications to prove it can deliver on that promise.

Here's what those ratings mean for your roof:

  • Class A Fire Rating: Earned through UL® 790 testing, this is the highest fire classification a roofing material can achieve.

  • Class 4 Impact Rating: Earned through UL® 2218 testing, this rating means the panels can withstand hail and flying debris once installed.

  • Freeze and Thaw Resistance: Built to handle the temperature swings that come with New England winters, without cracking or breaking down.

  • Wind-Driven Rain Resistance: Tested against 110 mph wind-driven rain, these panels keep moisture out even during the region's toughest storms.

From heavy snow to icy conditions to sudden temperature drops, a roof in this region rarely gets a break. Eco-Shake has been tested against each of those challenges, so your roof doesn't have to struggle to keep up.

Added Peace of Mind for Your New Roof

Every Eco-Shake installation comes with a 50-year transferable warranty, which means your investment stays protected for decades. And if you end up selling your home down the road, any remaining warranty coverage can be passed along to the new owner.

A specialty roof is a big decision, and knowing it's backed for the long haul takes a lot of the guesswork out of that decision. It's one more reason homeowners feel good about choosing Eco-Shake for their next roof.

Our Careful Installation Process

Getting the most out of an Eco-Shake roof comes down to how it's installed. We follow an AIA architectural specification method, originally developed for commercial projects, and apply the same level of precision to residential roofs.

Evaluation

We’ll start by taking a close look at your current roofing system, decking, and structure to figure out the best approach for your home. From there, we’ll remove old roofing materials as needed and address any decking repairs before proceeding with the new installation.

Installation

Once the roof is prepped, we’ll install underlayment and flashing to protect vulnerable areas. We’ll then add a 1/4-inch DenseDec substrate where needed to help the roof reach its Class 4 impact rating, followed by the Eco-Shake panels themselves.

Review

When the installation is complete, we’ll review the finished roof together, address any questions you might have, and make sure the property is left in solid shape. It's that final layer of care that helps turn a well-made product into a roof that lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

In several ways, Eco-Shake outperforms cedar. It resists moisture, meets a Class 4 impact rating, handles freeze-and-thaw cycles, and has passed wind-driven rain testing at 110 mph.

Every Eco-Shake installation from our team comes with a 50-year product warranty that can transfer to a future homeowner if you sell your house. Since coverage details vary, we'll go over the specifics with you during your consultation.

Not much. Since it isn't made from natural wood, you won't need to seal, stain, or refinish it. The color and UV protection are built into each panel to keep it looking good with very little effort.

That depends on the condition of your current roof. We'll first evaluate your decking and existing materials to determine whether removal or repairs are needed before installation begins.
